3D Printing: Which Filament Should I Choose?

Filaments, materials sold in the form of strings, are the foundation of every 3D printing model. Different materials have different properties, parameters and print differently. Do you know what materials are most commonly used and what each is suitable for?

Simplex

Single-sided scanning. The device can scan only one side of the inserted document. To scan the other side, you have to flip and reinsert the page.

Print Cartridge

Replaceable printer cartridges containing printing ink. Cartridges are used for inkjet printers, whereas toner is used for laser printers.

Virtual Reality Modeling Language

So-called VRML is a standard file format for 3-dimensional vector graphics and is used for creating web graphics as well as for printing 3D colour models.

FDM vs. SLA

These are two different printing technologies. SLA is used instead of a laser nozzle and is currently on the decline in favour of FDM, which operates with nozzles.

Nozzle

This is a component used in 3D printing whereby the material is melted and adjusted to the required thickness. Temperatures in the nozzle often range between 250-260°C. Most consumer models come equipped with one nozzle only, whereas two nozzles are found on more expensive models that offer colour printing.

Toner

A black or coloured powder (CMYK: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) used in laser printers and copiers. Toner production uses different polymers.

Cartridge

A replaceable ink cartridge for inkjet printers.

DPI

Dots per inch (DPI) indicates the number of dots in a printed inch.

Printhead

The printhead is a major component of an inkjet printer that contains the printing elements, enabling the printer to put ink on paper. The cartridge may or may not be part of the printhead. The printhead generally prints using three most common colours.

Printer Interface

Maximum Print Resolution

The number of pixels that a printer can print in a given area, most commonly measured in DPI (Dot Per Inch), which is an indication of how many image points (pixels) can fit onto a length of one inch. The higher the resolution, the finer and more detailed the image (depending on other parameters).

First Page Print Time

The time between the computer receiving the print job command to the printing of the first page of the document, during which the initial preparation of the printer takes place (control, warming up, etc.).
