These days, drones are primarily designed for recording video and taking pictures from above. Cameras are either built directly on the body (Parrot and Nine Eagles) or are suspended below the body (DJI).

More expensive models with suspended cameras use a so-called gimbal, a multi-axis mechanical stabiliser, which compensates for vibrations and ensures beautifully smooth shots. You can also buy drones with just the hinge and install a camera yourself.

Recording quality is generally reflected by the price. Drones at the bottom of the price spectrum offer filming at 720p resolution and less, whereas the DJI Phantom 4 and other more expensive models offer 4K resolution. Almost all drones are able to transmit live images to the screen of a mobile phone or tablet.
