Physical PC games are fairly uncommon nowadays. You obtain the licence when the PC game arrives to you in the mail and you just need to insert the installation disc into your PC and install the game. Some boxed releases today also include a code to register the PC game to a digital account.
Digital download licence
When you purchase a digital licence, you will receive an activation code for one of the web stores. Usually, you have to create an account and install the store's app, through which you then download the game. However, take note what virtual store the game code is for before you buy, as they are not compatible with each other.
