Carotenoids (e.g., lutein and specific forms of zeaxanthin) found in vegetables form the macular pigment, which is essential for healthy vision. This part of the retina protects light-sensitive cells from damage by excessive blue and ultraviolet light. The density of the macular pigment naturally decreases with age, and some people eventually lose the ability to produce meso-zeaxanthin from lutein. That's why MacuGuard Ocular Support with Astaxanthin contains lutein as well as trans-zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin, along with phospholipids to increase absorption and accumulation in the retina.
