Stinging nettle, known by its botanical name Urtica dioica, is often referred to simply as an unpleasant weed because of its ability to cause burning of the skin. However, behind this first unpleasant experience lies a plant with a rich history and fascinating properties.
Nettle
This perennial herb can grow up to 150 cm tall and stands out with its deep green, elongated leaves with sharply toothed edges. The tiny green flowers may be less conspicuous, but they certainly contribute to its recognisability. Nettle is characterised by hairs on its leaves and stems, which release substances that cause burning when touched.
What makes nettle stand out?
- Nettles are of key importance to many ecosystems, serving as an important food for the larvae of some butterfly species. Its existence promotes biodiversity and natural balance in many environments, attracting insects which then provide food for birds and other species.
- Nettle is a hardy plant that can find its way to live in a variety of places, from moist, fertile soils to shady corners. Its ability to adapt and grow in different conditions is admirable. Although nettles may seem to spread uncontrollably, with a little attention they can be kept at bay and prevented from invading unwanted areas.
- Despite its reputation as an unwelcome guest, stinging nettle can be a fascinating and useful part of the nature around us. Its benefits and its ability to survive in different conditions make it an interesting object of attention not only for botanists, but also for those trying to better understand the plant and animal communities in their surroundings.
