Prodipe SB21

Prodipe SB21 microphone functions as a clip-on condenser microphone with an electret capsule and a cardioid polar pattern. This device captures the sound of wind instruments and percussion on stage as well as in the studio. It uses a fixed 1500mm cable to connect, terminating in a Mini XLR connector. The connected adapter requires 48V phantom power for flawless operation. The microphone was developed in France in collaboration with Ludovic Lanen.

Prodipe SB21 microphone

Sound capture and polar pattern

The microphone uses a sensitive electret capsule with a cardioid polar pattern to capture sound. This design picks up sound primarily from the front and rejects unwanted sounds from other directions. The diaphragm handles sound pressure levels up to 140dB without unwanted distortion. The frequency range spans from 50 to 20000Hz. Linear transmission preserves the natural tone colour of wind instruments.

Noise suppression and wind protection

The design focuses on the rigorous elimination of mechanical noise during performance. The integrated shock mount effectively dampens vibrations transmitted from the instrument body and prevents impact sounds. A special flexible capsule suspension isolates key and valve noise during performances, preventing interference with the resulting tone. The package also includes a foam windshield for outdoor playing. The signal-to-noise ratio is 68dB.

Connection and outputs of the Prodipe SB21 microphone

A fixed cable of ample length connects the microphone to other audio equipment. This lead is 1500mm long. A Mini XLR connector at the end of the cable handles the connection. The set also includes an adapter to a standard three-pin XLR connector for classic wired connections. The output impedance of the entire system is exactly 2200 Ohm.

Power, battery and charging

The device does not have its own built-in battery, so it requires an external power source to operate. For a classic wired connection, a 48V phantom power supply from a mixing console is essential. Power is then supplied via the included XLR adapter. Alternatively, you can use the optional BP21 external power box, which runs on a standard 9V battery.

Mounting and design of the Prodipe SB21 microphone

The body construction cleverly combines a rigid support rod with a flexible gooseneck for maximum stability. This variable system offers wide possibilities for precise positioning of the capsule relative to the sound source. The included ergonomic clamp holds the microphone firmly on the bell of the specific wind instrument. The shape of the mount matches the specific curves of saxophones, trumpets or trombones.

Compatibility by connector

The device offers various connection options with audio equipment. The basic Mini XLR connector fits into wireless transmitters. With the included adapter, you can connect the microphone to standard XLR inputs on a mixing console. You can also connect the system to Prodipe UHF DSP B210 Solo or Duo wireless systems. The capsule impedance is fully compatible with these transmitters.

Microphone operating principle

Dynamic microphone is ideal for open-air performances, live broadcasts, music production and more. It uses a magnet and a moving coil to capture sound.
Condenser microphone is designed primarily for studio use. It offers higher sensitivity and lower noise, but requires external power.

Frequency range

The frequency range indicates the span of frequencies the microphone can record. A wider range means it captures more sound detail.
Low frequencies (e.g. 20–200Hz): bass, the deepest tones of instruments (double bass, kick drum) and male voices.
Mid frequencies (e.g. 200–3000Hz): the body of instruments and the core of the human voice where the ear is most sensitive, crucial for speech clarity.
High frequencies (e.g. 3000–14000Hz): treble, details, sibilance and the "brightness" of the sound.
Air band (above 14000Hz): adds a sense of premium, high-quality sound and spaciousness to recordings.

Sensitivity

Microphone sensitivity is the ratio of output voltage to acoustic pressure. It determines how strong a signal the microphone produces at a given acoustic pressure; higher sensitivity delivers a stronger voltage and is ideal for quiet studios, while lower sensitivity suits noisy environments as it reduces unwanted background noise.
