What to focus on when choosing a parking assist system

Obstacle warning

Parking assist systems detect obstacles in a range from a few centimetres away from the car to about two meters. The system can alert you in two ways.

• Audible warning - cheaper models. The beeping intensity increases the closer you get.
• Visual display - some models use both an audible warning and show the distance to the obstacle on the dashboard display. The more expensive products also have a rear view camera, so you can see what’s going on behind you directly on the display.

Parking sensor scanning angle

Proximity sensors are able to detect a wide angle of 110° to 150° horizontally and 60° vertically.

Reversing parking sensors and towbars

Parking sensors can be used on cars equipped with a towbar as well. Place the central sensors further away from the centre to make sure they don’t detect the towbar. Some models come with specialised functions that ensure the sensor doesn’t assess the towbar or the spare tyre mounted on the door as an obstacle.
